Surfski experience with Dawid and Jasper Mocke

From your first stroke to your last, expect your paddling adventure in the tropical waters around Miavana to be unlike any other you have experienced. Quite simply, it is unrivalled. Your adventure begins enroute to Madagascar – remote and wild – it’s the enigma of Africa and a truly exotic travel destination. Access to Miavana is only via helicopter, on what has to be one of the most scenic ‘airport transfers’ on earth. Touching down on its private shores, you can hardly believe that this magnificent Robinson Crusoe-type island exists.

Surfski Dawid Mocke

Located in a secluded archipelago within a marine protected area, it is a remote island sanctuary at the ends of the earth. Stepping onto the island is like stepping into a dream. The excitement continues as you take your first stroke in new waters, knowing that virtually no-one has paddled the route you are about to embark on. The paddle routes and downwinds around Miavana are exceptional, yet remain mostly unchartered. Expect to discover new routes with your guides, the Mocke brothers. When combined with the week you will spend nights wild camping followed by your last nights on Miavana, it is a modern-day adventure which cannot be replicated.

7 Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Nosy Be and heli transfer to Miavana, located off the North East coast of Madagascar. Your trip starts with an afternoon exploring the island’s activities as well as paddling the tropical waters of Nosy Ankao.

Day 2 – 4: In the morning there will be a boat transfer to Madagascar mainland, and we will begin the adventure with a 75km overland journey on quad bikes, crossing the wild, sparsely populated countryside of northeastern Madagascar towards Vohemar. Vohemar is a historic town said to have been historically founded by pirates. It’s a 3-day downwind paddle along a remote and untouched coastline, where we will be camping on deserted beaches and headlands, surrounded by the raw beauty of Madagascar’s coast.

Day 5: On day 5 we will surf ski downwind (North) to end on Miavana, approximately 25km. Arriving on the island again to enjoy the luxury of Miavana’s villas, dining and activities.

Day 6 – 7: A day paddling near Nosy Ankao with various Miavana activities on offer from scuba diving, snorkelling or kitesurfing to trekking to discover the lemurs. To exploring the dune forests, combined with some relaxed moments of spa treatments if you wish for some much needed downtime.

Day 8: Your last morning on the island before departing for Nosy Be. This heli flight is over some exceptional coastlines and views that will stay with you for a lifetime.

My week long stay at Miavana was unparalleled in almost every aspect of luxury. Defining luxury not only in terms of great quality and exclusivity, but in terms of craftsmanship, consciousness and a unique enriching experience. The richness of the culture set the context for such unique environment, and is the pillar of every impressive distinguishing feature of Miavana.

Miavana will exceed your expectations. We traveled to Miavana for a week and had an incredible experience. The weather was perfect, the staff was attentive and there was enough activities on offer to keep us busy (honestly we could have stayed an extra week). The island is also home to a group of crowned lemurs which were amazing to see!
