Striving to Make a Difference

At Time + Tide, we are committed to safeguarding our unique natural environments and neighbouring communities for many generations to come through the support of the Time + Tide Foundation.

The Time + Tide Foundation creates social value in the Time + Tide communities. As the philanthropic arm of the Time + Tide tourism brand, the foundation invests in the future productivity of wildlife economies through community and school-based learning.

OUR VALUE WEB

Our value web is at the core of who we are, focusing on four key pillars: community, conservation, sustainability and local economies, to ensure that all of our efforts go towards the safeguarding of some of these wild and precious places, the people, the communities and the generations to follow.

Replenish the Wild

We are committed to preserving and protecting Africa’s vulnerable wildlife and habitats in our area of operations. In Zambia, we proudly support local conservation management organisations with anti-poaching, environmental education, human-wildlife conflict and wildlife rehabilitation efforts. In Madagascar, our full-time environmental team facilitates a number of conservation initiatives and research programmes that directly benefit 1,300 residents in the Loky-Manambato Protected Area, and a further 5,500 residents through indirect benefits from procurement, job creation and the potential for conservation-focused income-generating projects.

Tread mindfully

Our luxury camps have the latest in eco-friendly technology called evening breeze, this innovative system cools inside the mosquito net without comprising comfort. Our camps are built using local techniques and sustainable local materials and are run on predominantly solar power, leaving minimal impact on the surrounding environment.

Invest locally

Our vision is to uplift and empower through investing in the people, places and wildlife of our beautiful spaces. We are dedicated to employing locally, ensuring that Time + Tide’s efforts go back into the community in which we operate as well as supporting the local community through sourcing most of our fresh produce from neighbouring communities.

Care for our community

The Time + Tide Foundation drives community empowerment initiatives across Zambia and Madagascar. With a key focus on inclusive, safe learning for vulnerable children, the foundation’s philosophy is simple: Investing in the education of our future guardians to preserve our majestic landscapes, extraordinary wildlife and rich cultures for tomorrow. The foundation proudly contributes annually towards community, health, education, women empowerment and wildlife conservation.

Turtle Monitoring

Turtle Monitoring

Miavana is one of those rare places where several species of sea turtles nest in safety, including the critically-endangered Hawksbill turtle, Green turtle and Olive Ridley turtle. Our environmental team patrols the beaches daily in search of nesting activity, recording all sightings and nest locations to ensure they are carefully monitored and protected.

Lemur Translocation

Crowned Lemur Translocation

Partnering with local authorities and conservation groups in Madagascar and abroad, we undertook a lemur translocation with the goal of moving this endangered species from an area of high poaching and habitat loss to our protected island sanctuary. Two groups have successfully adapted to and reproduced in their new environment, where they are monitored daily by our dedicated environmental team.

Tern Monitoring

Tern Monitoring

We run a tern monitoring programme on neighbouring Nosy Manampaho, collecting data on the species and number of nesting terns on the island. Up to 90,000 birds visit between the months of June and October, making this one of the most important seabird colonies in the Indian Ocean. The objective is to protect these birds and their eggs from poaching and predation.

Marine Conservation

Marine Conservation

The exquisite reefs surrounding Miavana boast high coral cover and extremely diverse fish species, but face the threat of overfishing and climate change. Our marine conservation projects include coral nurseries, MPA zoning and education among local communities and fishing associations about protecting the reefs and sustainable fishing techniques.

Sustainability

Sustainability

As a direct response to reducing our carbon footprint, Miavana has a resource management strategy under way with the aim of reducing our consumption of energy through solar power, eliminating single-use plastics, managing our waste and conserving precious water supplies. In everything that we do, our goal is to tread mindfully and preserve our planet.

Local Economies

Local Economies

Investing at home means we prioritise local employment, provide opportunities for training and career advancement, and focus on a culture of continuous learning and growth. We strengthen local economies by supporting local procurement and small enterprises in this remote region of Madagascar. With the added benefit of further reducing our carbon footprint.

Education & Health

Education & Health

Through the Time + Tide Foundation, we provide healthcare and educational support to some of the most remote coastal populations in Madagascar. This involves a student sponsorship programme and school support through the recruitment of teachers, teacher training, procurement of supplies, school construction and rehabilitation. Additionally, a home-based programme focuses on children with special needs, building inclusive communities that foster opportunities for all.

Empowerment

Female Empowerment

Through dedicated female empowerment initiatives, young girls are inspired to believe in themselves as well as their academic and professional potential. Our girls clubs focus on literacy, reproductive health and self-esteem, fostering healthy choice making to build bright futures. Facilitators also meet with the children’s parents to gather their thoughts, dreams and vision for their children.

My week long stay at Miavana was unparalleled in almost every aspect of luxury. Defining luxury not only in terms of great quality and exclusivity, but in terms of craftsmanship, consciousness and a unique enriching experience. The richness of the culture set the context for such unique environment, and is the pillar of every impressive distinguishing feature of Miavana.

Miavana will exceed your expectations. We traveled to Miavana for a week and had an incredible experience. The weather was perfect, the staff was attentive and there was enough activities on offer to keep us busy (honestly we could have stayed an extra week). The island is also home to a group of crowned lemurs which were amazing to see!
