Some mornings begin with a simple question. Where are the fish moving today? Studying the tides, the currents, and the colour of the water guides us part of the way, while instinct, experience, and a deep respect for the ocean carries us further. Heli-fishing at Miavana is for those drawn to a deeper pull: wide skies, powerful fish and the freedom to chase what lies beyond the next horizon.
As you step into the helicopter and Miavana falls away beneath you, reefs glow through clear water like secret maps. Sandbanks rise from azure seas, untouched and waiting. This is how we reach water that has barely seen a line, where every cast carries weight.

Heli-fishing is freedom. Opening access to places most anglers will never stand.
Some days, we touchdown on a narrow strip of sand, water lapping on both sides, the shallows alive with movement. Other days, we land beside a waiting boat, already positioned to run into deeper blue, allowing you to reach grounds too distant for an easy run from the island, but too promising to miss out on. Air and sea work together, keeping you where the action is strongest.

Closer to Miavana, summer brings warm, generous water and serious fish. This is Giant Trevally country. Ranging from 20 to 50 kg, they are fast and unforgiving. When they hit, everything tightens. Kingfish species move with authority and power. Whether you’re seeking heart-stopping action or leisurely targeting smaller fish, the area is an angler’s dream, with over 40 species available to catch and release.
From the boat, the popping and jigging opportunities in the area are exceptional, with fish such as Jobfish, Groupers, King Mackerel and Yellowfin Tuna. There are excellent reefs and drop-offs for fly fishing with sinking lines where you might catch big Dogtooth Tuna and GTs. October to April offers the best fishing conditions around Miavana.

As the season changes, the wind shifts direction, and we look to the west. Early lift-offs and new coastlines to explore. The helicopter carries us to Nosy Be, towards the Mitsio Islands, and Castor Banks. Your boat waits in position, tackle rigged, eyes scanning the horizon. Sailfish will be high on the cards. Some trips span the length of a day. Others stretch overnight, perhaps aboard a catamaran, gear rinsed and drying, stars bright overhead. You sleep deeply in anticipation of tomorrow, wake before first light, and head straight back to it.

Best months for Sailfish are June through August. You see the bill first, then the sail flare electric blue. On fly, on switch bait, or trolling, it demands focus. When a sailfish commits, the world narrows to line, drag, and instinct. They run hard, leap high, and test every knot you have tied.
It is clean, honest fishing. The kind that leaves salt dried on your skin and a satisfaction that stays with you.
These abundant waters don’t stop there. Dogtooth Tuna hold strong. Yellowfin cut fast, bright and relentless. Snapper and Grouper anchor themselves below, steady and stubborn. And sometimes, when conditions align, Marlin appear. Big, powerful, and unpredictable. Select species are strictly catch-and-release. Others, where stocks are strong and sustainable, may be brought back to Miavana, where our chefs transform the day’s catch into something delicious for you and entirely deserved.

It goes beyond the count at the end of the day. What stays with you is the weight of that first cast into open, untouched water. The split second when the line tightens, and everything else falls away. The quiet respect you feel for the ocean, which demands patience and gives back on its own terms.
