Our Commitment to Conservation

At Miavana, our dedication to sustainability is woven into the very fabric of our existence. The shores of our private island are not just a picturesque backdrop but a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship. 

The creation of Miavana was a labor of love, taking four years to complete. During this time, over 100,000 indigenous trees were planted, restoring the natural vegetation, and using only natural and recycled materials to build our 14 luxurious villas. Set along the pristine beach and surrounded by sprawling coral reefs, our villas offer a secluded haven where you can immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty while enjoying unparalleled luxury.

Through ongoing conservation projects, we strive to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of our surroundings. Our environment team works tirelessly to ensure that future generations can enjoy these pristine shores just as much as we do today. As part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we have implemented a comprehensive resource management strategy. This includes reducing energy consumption through solar power, eliminating single-use plastics, managing waste effectively, and conserving precious water supplies.

Discover Marine Marvels

Dive into the crystal-clear waters surrounding Miavana and uncover an underwater paradise teeming with life. Our pristine coral reefs are home to a vibrant array of marine species, from colorful fish to graceful sea turtles. Snorkelling or diving in these waters is not just about witnessing the beauty of marine biodiversity; it’s about understanding the delicate balance that sustains these ecosystems.

The exquisite reefs around Miavana boast high coral cover and an incredible diversity of fish species. However, they face threats from overfishing and climate change. To combat these challenges, our marine conservation projects include establishing coral nurseries, implementing Marine Protected Area (MPA) zoning, and educating local communities and fishing associations about protecting reefs and using sustainable fishing techniques.

Conservation initiatives and purposeful adventure

Every adventure at Miavana is an opportunity to connect with nature and contribute to its preservation. Whether you’re exploring the island’s lush landscapes, kayaking through mangrove forests, or simply enjoying a sunset walk along the beach, you’re engaging in a form of travel that respects and honours the environment.

Tern monitoring programme

One of the pillars of our conservation efforts is our tern monitoring program on the neighboring island of Nosy Manampaho. From June to October, up to 125,000 terns visit, making it one of the most crucial seabird colonies in the Indian Ocean. By collecting detailed data on the species and number of nesting terns, we work to safeguard these birds and their eggs from poaching and predators, ensuring the preservation of this vital ecological haven.

Turtle Monitoring Programme 

Our turtle monitoring program stands as another cornerstone of our conservation efforts. From December to March, you can witness the enchanting moment when endangered sea turtles hatch on our beaches. Our dedicated team meticulously monitors nesting sites, ensuring the safety of both eggs and hatchlings. They collect valuable data to support broader conservation initiatives, guiding these tiny creatures safely to the ocean.

Lemur Translocation

In collaboration with local authorities and conservation groups in Madagascar and beyond, we spearheaded a significant lemur translocation project. This initiative relocated endangered lemurs from areas plagued by poaching and habitat loss to our protected island sanctuary. They have successfully acclimatised and reproduced in their new environment, and are continuously monitored by our dedicated environmental team.

Our lemur trekking excursions offer a rare opportunity to observe these remarkable primates in their natural habitat. Led by our knowledgeable guides, you’ll explore the island’s lush forests, gaining insights into the behaviours and habitats of this fascinating species. This immersive walk not only promises unforgettable wildlife encounters but also underscores our commitment to lemur conservation.
