There are countless ways to spend a day at Miavana by Time + Tide. Explore the island by quad bike, learn how to scuba dive, have a picnic on a neighbouring island, or venture out in search of Madagascar’s extraordinary wildlife – you have an abundance of choice. Yet every now and then, there is something rather special about a day spent no further than the sand outside your villa. With everything you need right here, and so much space and beauty to enjoy, you might sometimes struggle to leave. Here is one way a ‘day in’ might unfold…

6:15 AM | Let the light in

Ask your private Butler to leave the curtains open the night before and allow the island to wake you naturally. For most villas, the sun rises on the opposite side of Miavana, so there is no great burst of sunlight. Instead, morning arrives in shades of soft pink, gradually filling the bedroom and softly illuminating the mountains of the mainland beyond.

Linger a while longer, as the island starts to come to life. Hear birdsong on the breeze and listen to the ocean lap the shore. The Smeg bean-to-cup espresso machine takes care of the coffee; a homemade double chocolate chip cookie alongside it takes care of everything else.

7:00 AM | Barefoot before breakfast

Coffee in hand, wander down the steps and through your garden straight onto the beach. At this hour, the sand is still cool beneath your feet and the Indian Ocean stretches out ahead. While the water is warm, and beckons you for a dip. Venture as far as you like with no destination in mind. On the way back, rinse sandy toes beneath the tap at the foot of the stairs and head inside. By now, the villa’s floor-to-ceiling glass stacking doors have been folded away, letting the sea breeze move freely through the living spaces.

At over 450 square metres, there is plenty of room to spread out. The villa flows seamlessly from one space to the next, from bedroom to veranda and onwards towards the pool and beach. Indoors and outdoors begin to feel like part of the same place, and shoes quickly become unnecessary.

Private villa breakfast service at Miavana by Time + Tide Madagascar

9:00 AM | Breakfast at your own pace

Breakfast is brought to the villa and beautifully presented by your Butler, with tropical fruit, freshly pressed juices and warm pastries enjoyed overlooking the ocean. The breakfast menu offers unique dishes that focus on local, seasonal ingredients, bringing a twist to the usual start to the day, such as Eggs Royale with wild spinach, smoked mackerel and coconut Béarnaise, or a rock lobster omelette with crispy ginger and lime.

The rest of the morning asks very little of you. Settle into an armchair with a book, sink into one of the wonderfully comfortable sofas or drift across the private pool. The view has a habit of stealing attention, and a few unread pages are a small price to pay for the ever-changing postcard in front of you.

11:30 AM | The spa comes to you

With a gentle knock on the door and the soft rustle of fabric, an oasis appears in the privacy of your own deck, complete with a comfortable spa bed and a menu of healing therapies to choose from. Perhaps a signature Miavana massage, with warm coconut oil drizzled over smooth seashells, or an aromatherapy massage using a blend of all-natural African essential oils. Here, the soundtrack is the soft murmur of the waves, birdsong and the breeze moving through the palms. And when the treatment ends, there is no need to gather your things and go anywhere. Let the peace linger: enjoy a warm cup of ginger, honey and lemon tea, slip quietly into the pool, stretch out in the shade, or surrender to an afternoon nap, preserving that wonderful post-treatment sense of calm for a little longer.

1:30 PM | Lunch, wherever you happen to be

By lunchtime, the shade of the veranda is particularly inviting, and there is little reason to wander any further. Lunch is prepared in Miavana’s main kitchen before making its way to the villa, where your Butler sets the table overlooking the Indian Ocean and the afternoon continues at its own gentle pace. The dedicated in-villa menu lends itself to a long lunch. There might be Malagasy bouillabaisse, fragrant with sustainably caught seafood, freshly grilled line fish with pickled cabbage and an oriental dressing, or seafood tagliatelle with garlic, white wine and parsley. On other days, a simple caesar salad or a club sandwich with crisp French fries is just the thing to hit the spot.

The villa’s kitchen is never far away either, with your favourite drinks chilled in the fridge and beautiful teas and fresh coffee on hand. Homemade treats appear throughout the villa, creating the easy feeling that this is not simply somewhere to retreat between adventures, but a place to settle into.

3:30 PM | An afternoon entirely your own

The afternoon can be as active or as idle as the mood dictates. Step down from your villa and into the warm Indian Ocean for a snorkel, unroll a yoga mat on the deck or settle into a board game in the shade. There is always the pool for another swim, a sofa for an afternoon nap, or perhaps a sun lounger and a G&T.

Even during a day spent solely in your villa, the island has a wonderful way of revealing itself. Olive bee-eaters dart through the gardens, flashes of colour against the ocean beyond. During turtle nesting season, fortunate guests may witness hatchlings emerging from the sand just outside their villa. Guests have even watched humpback whales lifting their tails above the water just offshore, all from the comfort of their bed.

5:30 PM | Sunset on your doorstep

As afternoon gives way to evening, your Butler prepares a private sundowner on the deck, just as the lowering sun begins to cast long ribbons of amber and gold through the villa. Cocktails are poured with Madagascan rum, accompanied by canapés inspired by the warm, fragrant spices for which the island has long been known. Or perhaps an elegantly simple glass of Champagne, served with Madagascan Rova caviar and blinis on the beach. With the sun setting directly in front of the villas, there is no need to venture elsewhere in search of the perfect view. Settle into a favourite chair, raise a glass to Madagascar, and watch as the last light slowly disappears across the Indian Ocean.

7:30 PM | Dinner beneath the stars

As darkness settles over the island, lanterns begin to glow on the grass between your villa and the beach, illuminating a table dressed in crisp white linen just a few steps from the Indian Ocean. Tonight calls for something a little different, with Miavana’s chefs creating a special private dinner for the occasion, prepared just for you and served slowly beneath the stars. Later, an outdoor movie might await, or simply a nightcap accompanied by a selection of sweet treats from the kitchen, featuring some of Madagascar’s most celebrated ingredients from rich, aromatic chocolate to fragrant vanilla.

10:00 PM | Goodnight, Miavana

Inside, your Butler has transformed the villa for the final time. The bedroom has been cooled, the mosquito net lowered and the lights softened; fresh water waits beside the bed, and a warm bath has been drawn. Tomorrow might carry you high above the island by helicopter, beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean or across the archipelago in search of somewhere new. But today, the island came to you.

That is one of the greatest pleasures of Miavana: there is no single way to experience it. One day might be filled with adventure and discovery, while another unfolds slowly within the privacy of your own villa, where the sea is always just a few steps away and every detail has been thoughtfully taken care of. The luxury lies in having the freedom to choose, knowing that however far you venture, or however close to home you remain, there is always another side of the island waiting to be discovered.

My week long stay at Miavana was unparalleled in almost every aspect of luxury. Defining luxury not only in terms of great quality and exclusivity, but in terms of craftsmanship, consciousness and a unique enriching experience. The richness of the culture set the context for such unique environment, and is the pillar of every impressive distinguishing feature of Miavana.

Miavana will exceed your expectations. We traveled to Miavana for a week and had an incredible experience. The weather was perfect, the staff was attentive and there was enough activities on offer to keep us busy (honestly we could have stayed an extra week). The island is also home to a group of crowned lemurs which were amazing to see!
